DUKON HARRIS
Comanche / Sac & Fox

Raised in Oklahoma, Dukon Harris felt an early calling to create art and knew from a young age that he was meant to be an artist. Growing up in a family of artists, he learned to carve his own path and develop a distinct creative voice. From pencil drawings and colored pencil work to using clay from the ground, art has always been his way of self-expression.

Dukon is an enrolled tribal member of the Comanche Nation of Oklahoma and is deeply proud of his heritage. Known historically as the “Lords of the Plains,” the Comanche people continue to inspire Dukon’s work, which reflects the rich traditions and visual language of Plains-style culture.

A self-taught, multidisciplinary artist, Dukon works in acrylic and oil painting on canvas and wood, mural spray painting, digital art, tattooing, wood and antler carving, and woodburning. As a student, he used his notebooks as a personal portfolio, excelling in drawing classes and ultimately pursuing formal art education at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

While living in Upstate New York, Dukon became immersed in the culture of the Mohawk people of Akwesasne, blending their artistic influences with his Western Plains background. This cultural exchange is evident in his work, where he creates a unique visual collaboration across a wide range of subjects.

Dukon has exhibited his art at markets throughout Indian Country, including SWAIA’s Santa Fe Indian Market and the Smithsonian Native Art Market in New York City. Expanding his creative journey beyond the canvas, he portrayed legendary athlete Jim Thorpe in the History Channel documentary Lit by Lightning: The Jim Thorpe Story (2025), an experience he considers a once-in-a-lifetime honor.

Today, Dukon Harris serves as the NAGPRA Director for the Sac & Fox Nation of Oklahoma in the Office of Historic Preservation. Through both his art and professional work, he remains committed to preserving Native stories, strengthening cultural connections, and inspiring future generations.
